Book Notes from John Cornick's reading of Smith's "52 Years at the Labrador Fishery"

Fitzgerald:

A reference to the author’s encounter with another schooner on Nov. 11,
1888, off Cape Lewis, Labrador while enroute home from Indian Harbour in his
schooner “Coronella”. “ We both followed on across the straights, the wind
light, and at lamp light were close to Cape Bauld, both schooners calm. The
wind veered from the SE again and it began to snow. We had to beat up to
Fortune and arrived there after some difficulty. We anchored in Fortune
Bight but there was no sign of our companion schooner. We made a big fire,
and lighted torches for his guidance and finally saw him coming; he anchored
close by and we went on board and found it to be Capt. Maurice Fitzgerald
from Harbour Grace.”

Kennedy

A reference to Mr. Edward Kennedy of Avondale supplying the fishing crews at
Splitting Knife. Labrador in July of 1888.

Reference during the summer of 1905 to “Mr. Kennedy of Avondale loading a
steamer at Kavanagh Tickle with 14, 000 quintals of fish, and hearing that I
had another thousand quintals on the bawn ready for shipping, he sent his
agent, another Mr. Kennedy, down to Cutthroat to know if I would sell”. A
sale was made and the author describes being royally entertained by Mr.
Kennedy and the steamer captain aboard his ship.

Pumphery

Author refers to Capt. Pumphery, a large dealer for J. Munn and Co. (Hr.
Grace,) supplying 10 fishing crews fishing out of Jigger Tickle, Labrador
during the summer of 1888.
